The Courter Farm

This pastoral scene is West Oak Street in 1910 going up the hill from present I-287 to Mount Airy Road.  The farm was then known as the Courter Farm after its owner William Courter.  The present Courter Street was named for the family.  The large barn burned in the 1930s, but the farmhouse, built in 1807, still stands at 189 West Oak .  Early residents of the house included Mary Alice Thompson (c.1850), and E. S. Lamereaux (c.1860). Later owners were the Obermans and Styles.

The land behind the buildings was developed in the 1960s as Sloping Hills Estates.  By 1967, 46 homes had been built there.

The photograph was a donation from the late Bernards Township Historian June O. Kennedy.
