Bernards Fife & Drum Corps

The Bernards Fife and Drum Corps, Bernardsville, NJ, was organized on July 16, 1906 and posed that year for this photo, possibly before a parade.  The date is supported by a note on the reverse by Edwin S. Spinning, fire company president, who also identified the building on the right as Bernardsville’s first firehouse.  The firehouse was built in 1905 at 1 Anderson Rd. (then the Guerin property, now the public library).

The members are identified on the back:

F & D Corps 1906
Chas. Moffett, Teacher & Leader
L to R = Al. Nash, Paul Allen, Mike Balco, Ed Roe, C. Van Riper
K. McKenzie, Sam Couldrie, Erv. Trimmer, Will Adair, Fred Hedden
Elmer Gardner, & Tommy Day, on horse.

The Corps was still going strong in 1910 when a performance of the play “All the Comforts of Home” was performed at the Bernards Inn for their benefit.
