Lyons Railroad Station Blueprints

The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills (THSSH) recently received a set of five blueprints of the Lyons Railroad Station.    The drawings are a welcome addition to our archives because the building is on the national and N.J. registers of historic places (since 1984).

Rail service began at Lyons in 1872 when the New Jersey West Line Railroad reached Bernardsville. An early wooden station at Lyons burned in 1918 and for many years, a baggage car was used as a replacement.  In 1931, prompted by the opening of the Lyons VA Hospital and electrification of the rail line, the Delaware Lackawanna railroad built a new brick and stucco, Tudor/Mission Revival structure.  Designed by architect Daniel T. Mack, the station was the last built along the Gladstone branch.  It’s still a functioning station and is owned by Bernards Township.
