Volunteer Opportunities

The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills (THSSH) has no paid staff. By contributing their talents to help with our programs and projects, scores of local volunteers, from high school students to retirees keep THSSH operating.

Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. When you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.

Raise Your Hand...Volunteer!

Volunteering is easy!
The only requirements are compassion, an open mind, a positive attitude, and a willingness to do whatever is needed.  Training will be provided! Volunteer hours are flexible.  Most volunteer opportunities require only a limited time commitment.

Volunteering is beneficial!
Studies show that volunteering:

  • Helps you stay physically and mentally HEALTHY
  • Provides a rewarding ESCAPE from your day-to-day routine
  • CONNECTS you with the local community
  • Enables you to LEARN new skills and achieve personal GROWTH
  • Offers unique OPPORTUNITIES regardless of previous experience or education
  • Provides a fulfilling sense of ACHIEVEMENT

Volunteering is fun!
One of the best ways to make new friends and strengthen existing personal relationships is to commit to a shared enjoyable activity together.  Many volunteers make lifelong friendships.

Guidelines for Authors

The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills (THSSH) publishes newsletter articles and social media posts about Somerset Hills history.

Before submitting text for articles, you should review recent postings on our website, social media, and our Inside the Brick Academy newsletter (available on our website). Becoming familiar with our style and content will help ensure your writing is a good fit for THSSH and simplify the editorial process.

Your submission should be a unique work that has not been published elsewhere. If any of the material in your article or post has been or will be published elsewhere, please consult with the editor before submitting.

The primary focus of your writing should be the five towns of the Somerset Hills: Bedminster Twp., Bernards Twp. (Basking Ridge), Bernardsville, Far Hills, and Peapack-Gladstone.

Text should be submitted in electronic form (MS Word preferred).  Photos or illustrations should be included as attachments and include wording for the credits/permissions.

Submissions may undergo substantial revision during editing and authors are included in each step.  Authors should provide sources for statements of fact other than those that are common knowledge.  Longer articles such as those for Inside the Brick Academy should include footnotes.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the THSSH editor at research@somersethillshistoricalsociety.org before starting your manuscript.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills has a small staff and the mission is challenging. Because we preserve and interpret more than 200 years of history, the task is far more manageable (and fun!) with the involvement and support of community members.

We want your volunteer experience to be as rewarding to you as it is for the Society. Training is provided for all volunteer positions.

The amount of time you volunteer depends upon the type of position you choose, as well as the time you have available. For example, Archives & Research volunteers may be called on once a month, while Bookstore or Hospitality volunteers are needed only a couple of times a year.  Still others are ongoing but have flexible hours that suit your schedule, such as Clerical, or Gardens & Grounds.

All of our volunteers receive our newsletter, invitations to all events, and discounts on tours and the Museum store. You can also expect to meet interesting people and learn more about our the history of the Somerset Hills.
