Oak Street School Construction

In 1938, construction workers were hard at work on Bernards Township’s newest school, Oak Street.  These photos were taken November 21, 1938 by teacher Louise M. Flint (c.1889-1976) and preserved in her scrapbook. The title on the page reads “Basking Ridge School, West Oak Street.”

Oak Street School was financed partially with an $80,000 grant from the Public Works Administration (PWA).  Bernards Township raised another $100,000 by issuing 20-year municipal bonds. The school was built on the former Whitnall farm.

Louise M. Durkee Flint (c.1889-1976), began teaching in Bernards Township in 1924.  Mrs. Flint was a life member of the Basking Ridge Historical Society (now The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills) and served as trustee for nine years beginning in 1962.  Her scrapbook is now in the archives of the Society.
