Baseball was a thriving amateur sport in the early part of the 20th century. This photo from Peapack-Gladstone, NJ, shows the Gladpack Athletic Club in 1936. A caption, partially cut off indicates they were champions of the Inter-County League, which included teams from Rockaway, Bernardsville, Far Hills, and Stirling.

Amzie Hoffman (1885-1957), the manager, was a P-G Borough councilman (1930-39) and the superintendent of Mt. Paul Farm, the Mendham (Roxiticus Road) estate of the Winston family. Frank Gallo was later a policeman and police chief in Peapack-Gladstone. By 1939, he was serving as both a player and manager (see below). His brother William Gallo was team coach in 1939 and was a mechanic for the county road department. Clyde Manning worked for the P-G road department and was an auctioneer at Mannings Auction in Peapack. John Gilmore and Dan Ricco, according to newspaper reports, were the team’s pitchers.
