This real picture postcard shows a “cottage” on the grounds of Froh Heim, the lavish estate of Grant B. Schley (1845-1917) in Far Hills, NJ. Schley began building the estate, which also included a main house, barns and other buildings in 1888. Froh Heim, which means “Happy Home” in German, eventually grew to several thousand acres including Schley Mountain.
The card is postmarked June 8,1908 in Bedminster and was sent from someone named Fenton to Mrs. Harry Morrell in Hopewell, NJ. The writer says the cottage was built by Schley “for the man to raise and take care of the pheasants.” Notice what appears to be a pheasant lawn ornament.

Much of Froh Heim was torn down and rebuilt by Grant’s son Evander “Van” Schley. Today, the estate is known as Moorland Farm and hosts the annual Far Hills Race Meeting.
