On the Road to Bernardsville

A stone wall provides a nice place to rest in this early 20th century photo titled “On the Road to Bernardsville.”   The location may be North Finley Avenue on the curve near Fox Hollow Trail.  The direction is looking south toward Basking Ridge.  The stone wall is no longer there and may have been part of an early bridge before installation of the current culvert.[1]

The photographer is identified as Williiam H. Broadwell, who also took an early shot of the original Basking Ridge Railroad Station (See:  https://somersethills.catalogaccess.com/photos/229).    Since we know Broadwell was in Basking Ridge taking photos for postcards, he perhaps walked down Finley to Bernardsville.

The back of the Road to Bernardsville card has a divided back (1907 or later) so the photo likely dates to the same timeframe as the Basking Ridge Train Station card (1907-1911).
