Brick Academy Class Photo

This class photo from the Brick Academy in Basking Ridge, NJ, is interesting on several levels.

Teachers and Students at Brick Academy, 1890s

Although faded, the photograph shows students and teachers from the 1890s when the Brick Academy was used as a Bernards Township public school.   Today, when students from Bernards Township and Bernardsville visit the building on their class trips, they see the upper floor classroom, restored to the same 1890s period.

Thanks to a note accompanying the photo, two of the students may have been identified. John Herbert Childs (1886-1947) may be the fifth from the left in the front row; Raymond Henry (1884-1935) may be the second from the right, front row.

The brick and stonework are also interesting because there are no windows visible. The east and west walls of the Brick Academy have ground floor windows. That means the back (north) side of the Brick Academy is the likely location for the photo.
